In “The Lion at the Gate,” a strange piece of graffiti leads to a terrifying encounter for four school friends. Each story was complex and atmospheric, and it didn’t take much for me to envisage myself in the protagonist’s shoes, it’s safe to say every story was fully immersive.

It does set us up, to a degree, for what is still to come, but not so much as to spoil any surprises.

It was simply that I wanted to see more of characters like Gloria and to learn more about the bleak future worlds with their hints of cataclysm and desperation. The opening story, End of the Line, jumps straight in with an immediately engaging story of a 75-year-old woman who has spent the last 50 years on a luxury cruise ship. If you like horror/thriller and only medium gross, to be safe, her stuff is great and also pretty funny imo. What I learned from this book: That everything can be an inspiration, even the smallest things in our daily lives.

The sun might currently blazing outside, but this collection will make for perfect reading matter as the dark autumn nights draw in, when so many of us begin to turn the the unsettling and the disturbing. Runaway Blues is a classic tale of misdirection, as a couple intent on learning more about the latest jazz sensation in the Blue Flamingo club, their favourite Friday night haunt, decide to sneak into his dressing room to peak into the hat box that accompanies him everywhere. With many of these imaginative tales written during the pandemic, this lends a dystopian and end of the world vibe to them. An aging cat, a cantankerous husband, and a woman that wishes the past was still very much the present. Tudor’s novels are widely acclaimed for their dark, twisty suspense plots, but with A Sliver of Darkness, she pulls us even further into her dizzying imagination. He had been in a nursing home for two years, and because of Covid lockdowns, she could only visit him for thirty minutes every two weeks, speaking to him through Perspex. I have give this terrific collection of stories a rating of 4 1/2 "FUNTASTIC AND CREEPILICIOUS" 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌠 STARS! Overall, if you like short stories with elements of horror which may give you the shivers then this collection should tick that box. These eleven twisted tales of the macabre from the bestselling author of The Chalk Man and The Burning Girls are your perfect companions as the nights draw in. In The Completion, an estate agent makes the bargain of a lifetime and The Lion at the Gate features some rather startling graffiti.
