The harvesting process kills one in twenty-five, and once the Emperor starts inscribing commands in the shard to use in a construct, the person will begin to decline. For me, though, my investment in the characters, combined with Andrea’s easy writing, made it go by smoothly. I really loved how we were fed bits of information about the setting a few at a time, and each thing only made me more intrigued, especially with the idea of floating islands that can drown, and the mysterious, elusive Alangi civilization.

This conflict of Phalue being the governor’s daughter versus Ranami who grew up on the streets, backdropped by a sweet, loving (sapphic! The book is written from 5 or 6 perspectives, which initially made it difficult to settle into the flow of the story.

Determined, Lin sets out to pry at her father's secrets and unlock the mysteries of his creations one by one. Favourite character has to be Lin, and her gradual realisation that she's not what she seems, and the dark, regal though neglected environment she inhabits dovetails seamlessly with the theme of the book.Stewart gives us eerie, grungy bone magic that permeates through every layer of a fascinating and dangerous world.

I greatly appreciated that the author was able to create some elements that were very low stakes and pleasant while also choosing to not pull punches with some gut-wrenching deaths or concepts. Arguably, Jovis is the central central character, as he gets the most page time, and Lin second, and then the rest. The writing was the perfect blend of first and third person narration that varied from different character perspectives.

It’s so interesting being able to explore the dark, gruesome, almost steampunk kind of magic system that feels like you are unravelling a mystery that is already falling apart at the seams. p>Sign up to the Little, Brown newsletter for news of upcoming publications, competitions and updates from our authors. NOTE: I both read and listened to the audiobook, which featured three narrators—Natalie Naudus, Emily Woo Zeller, and Feodor Chin, the former two who I’ve heard a lot about (Natalie Naudus’ Tik Tok narrating is absolutely HILARIOUS). The geographic background of islands that move with the seasons is quite original, as is the system of magic by which it is ruled. Given my interest in Asian-themed fantasy, it came as a surprise that I didn’t hear about Andrea Stewart’s debut novel, The Bone Shard Daughter, until about a week before it launched to a parade of glowing critical reviews.
