The authors’ passion for the dynamic field of neuroscience is evident on every page, engaging students and helping them master the material. In just a few years, the field of neuroscience has been transformed by exciting new technologies and an explosion of knowledge about the brain. Great book for even introductory readers like me who is trying to understand what goes on between ears.

This book lacks fine detail, especially with respect to electrophysiology, computational approaches and molecular neuroscience. For systems neuroscience students, I'd advise Larry Squire's Fundamental Neuroscience for Systems Neuroscience over this, as it has more chapters dedicated to functions of the nervous system (sleep, pain etc. Even though the first 6 chapters may seem familiar and’ve been already covered in physiology courses, it has its own taste and beauty and makes reading it feel like the first time. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including the Journal of Neuroscience, Journal of Neurophysiology, Cerebral Cortex, and Brain Structure and Function. I was actually surprised and disappointed when the book suddenly ended with so many questions left unanswered -- but I guess that's how science goes.I recommend this for anyone who wants to see the very basic connections between neuronal function and behavior. Widely praised for its student-friendly style and exceptional artwork and pedagogy, Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain is a leading undergraduate textbook on the biology of the brain and the systems that underlie behavior. The book includes clear illustrations and diagrams (that is, as clear as diagrams of brain wiring or second messenger cascades can be).

This book brought me up to speed and kept me reasonably current with the class through clear, straightforward speech and excellent scaffolding. Herbert Ballou University Professor of Neuroscience and a Professor of Medical Science at Brown University and the Alpert Medical School. He made fundamental discoveries on bidirectional synaptic plasticity, metaplasticity, the molecular basis of amblyopia (a cause of visual disability in children), and the pathophysiology of fragile X syndrome (the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism). Fox and Dorothea Doctors Fox Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Science and Professor of Neuroscience at Brown University. In general terms, the concepts are explained extraordinarily well and in an arrangement that gradually builds an understanding of the underlying cellular mechanics so the reader (astoundingly) doesn't find themselves over their heads when later chapters paint the broader pictures of memory and learning. Its way of simplifying complex concepts in a digestible writing without losing its powerful context is entirely captivating. He has been at the forefront of the efforts to translate knowledge of autism pathophysiology into new treatments. A neuroanatomy atlas insert (Appendix to Chapter 7) provides large images that highlight the anatomy of the brain, along with a self-quiz that gives students an opportunity to check their understanding. Some are essential to make our site work; others help us improve the user experience or allow us to effectively communicate with you.
