Why, I asked myself midway through this book—right around the time that my discomfort at White's antics gave way to boredom—would readers, much less diners, want to be in the company of such a gregariously antisocial character?

Once we reached Llyn y Cwn, my son declared that he wanted to also “hike up that mountain” pointing to Glyder Fawr on the left. The path up Devil’s Kitchen is steep and you will need to use your hands at times to scramble over bigger rocks and boulders. Not only did we re-visit the most stunning Llyn Idwal that holds a special place in my heart (since we had first, literally, stumbled upon it four years ago) but we also hiked up Devil’s Kitchen and discovered Llyn y Cwn. me, alternatively consider an annual subscription to OS to have access to all UK OS maps on your mobile.Below I describe 4 great walks of varying lengths, all of which pass near to this evocative narrow gorge.

The Devil in the Kitchen by Marco Pierre White, James Steen

Located in Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, Llyn Idwal lies within Cwm Idwal, the oldest National Nature Reserve in Wales.

It really comes down to the fact that Marco Pierre White may not have been the easiest man to like, but many of the people who worked for him loved him. The subtitle of The Devil in the Kitchen is Sex, Pain, Madness, and the Making of Great Chef… I think the more accurate title would have been “Being a great chef is an excuse for sex, pain, and madness”. He decided not to, gave it all back and focused on himself, changing his life to become a restaurateur. He has been true to his values because the moment he achieved his lifelong goal, the Michelin three stars and the five red “couverts”, he reassessed it all, realizing that his life as a person and not as a chef was actually what mattered more. As an autobiography, this is quite a revealing and straightforward book but also entertaining and especially evocative of Eighties London.
