at the time, he was a 22-year-old recently-graduated journalism major living back home with his parents waiting for his fiancée to finish her degree before embarking upon their espousèd life together. There was so much detail into the background of the narrator (Richard), that it distracted more so than helped the plot.

stars— If you are looking for a different type of book experience than a typical thriller novel, then “Chasing the Boogeyman” is for you. This led me to believe there would be a second interview but nope, the book ends, and we never do get those answers. I know all of the ways he spent his summers running through his neighborhood as a teen, and I also know how much he really loves his family and fiancé (now wife).

Chizmar’s work has been translated into more than fifteen languages throughout the world, and he has appeared at numerous conferences as a writing instructor, speaker, panelist, and guest of honor. It was a clever story, reminding me of the author Anthony Horowitz inserting himself into his stories. Once I saw that ringing endorsement by my all-time favorite author, I immediately purchased this book and could not put it down once I started. This is a fictional book written like a documentary movie- a slow paced boring documentary that you regret watching. I started late this year in rekindling my love of reading again back in July 2021 as I set a small yet reachable goal. Chizmar's short fiction has appeared in dozens of publications including Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine .

But if we step back from how “real” it all feels and just look at it as a novel, for a second, there is brilliant work here.when i first heard about this genre-blendy true crime/crime fiction mash-up, my first thought was "i wonder if james renner knows about this book? This is a slow-paced yet suspenseful read, especially as the tension between the narrator and the killer builds. I read it one time on my bus ride home after my late shift and for the first time I was frightened to walk along the short walk to my house in the dark on the lonely streets.

I wanted to turn that last page, close the book, and still question whether or not this was real or made up.As far back as I can remember, I have always associated the Boogeyman with the Shape, AKA Michael Myers, of the classic 1978 film, Halloween. Chizmar’s writing is on full display in this truly unique novel that will haunt you long after you turn the final page. Richard Chizmar narrates the novel, with himself as the central male protagonist, using real people and places with a plot inspired by the Phantom Fondler. During that time, four teenage girls with whom Chizmar has some connection (“They were friends of friends, siblings of friends, or in some cases, children of friends”) are murdered.
